Long-Term Clinical, Radiographic and Esthetic Outcomes of Zirconia Dental Implants: A 10-Year Prospective Multicenter Study

Objectives: This study aimed to prospectively investigate the long-term clinical performance of a commercially available onepiece zirconia dental implant system over 10 years.

Material and Methods: A multicenter, open-label study was conducted at three clinical centers in Germany. Forty-four patients with single-tooth gaps meeting specific inclusion criteria received 44 yttria-stabilized zirconia (Y-TZP) implants featuring a sandblasted and acid-etched (ZLA) surface.

Clinical outcomes of zirconia implants: a systematic review and meta‑analysis

Purpose: To assess the clinical outcomes of zirconia dental implants based on an updated systematic literature review.

Methods: An electronic search was performed in three databases, last updated in June 2023, supplemented by hand searching. The eligibility criteria were clinical studies reporting patients rehabilitated with zirconia implants. The cumulative survival rate (CSR) of implants was calculated. A meta-analysis for marginal bone loss (MBL) under different follow-up times and a meta-regression assessing the relationship between mean MBL and follow-up were done.

LTT-MELISA® is clinically relevant for detecting and monitoring metal sensitivity

Ojectives: Chronic low-level metal exposure may result in metal sensitization and undesirable side-effects. The main sources of metal exposure are from the environment or from corrosion of dental metal alloys. Affected patients are routinely diagnosed with the epicutaneous (patch) test. However, such testing may induce false-positive (irritative) reactions and may in itself sensitize or exacerbate symptoms. Alternatively, MELISA® (Memory Lymphocyte ImmunoStimulation Assay), an optimized lymphocyte transformation test (LTT), can be used. In this study we analyzed the overall frequency and distribution of metal sensitization among symptomatic, metal-exposed patients. In addition, we determined the reproducibility of the assay and assessed its clinical relevance for detecting and monitoring hypersensitivity to metals.

Methods: One-piece ceramic implants (CeraRoot) with a roughened acid-etched surface (ICE) were used. Six different implant shapes/sizes were used in this study. Either a standard or flapless surgical approach was used for implant placement. Simultaneous bone augmentation or sinus elevation was performed when bone height or width was deficient. Definitive zirconia restorations were placed after 2 months or later if the Periotest value was > –3. The implants were followed up for up to 15 years.
